Kazzinc reduces air emissions

The largest company in the region has summed up the results of environmental measures implemented in 2019. Sulfur dioxide emissions were reduced by 600 tons compared to 2018.

Reduction of air emissions

One of the key areas of modernization of the UK MK is the implementation of promising works at the facilities of the Sulfuric Acid Plant, where waste gas is processed. So, in 2019, the installation of a new pipe of the Haldor Topsoe installation was completed. The pipe itself, although not a filter, has a very important function. Gas after multi-stage purification in the main elements of the installation is purified from sulfur dioxide by 96% but contains a minimum amount of pollutants. The emission of gas at a certain height allows it to dissipate in the atmosphere to a safe concentration without reaching the ground. The height of the pipe is confirmed by expert calculations and remains the same - 102 meters.

Recall that the equipment was purchased and delivered to the UK MK in 2018. At the end of 2019, experts dismantled the old pipe. Currently, the issue of its environmentally friendly processing, using recycled materials, is being addressed. In total, replacement work cost 1.3 billion tenge.

The technologies operating on the MC MK allow trapping and disposing of up to 99.8% of the generated dust. Nevertheless, in 2019, work began on the selection of options for modernizing equipment for cleaning dusty gases. In 2020, technical documentation will be developed with subsequent phased replacement of filters, with a total capacity of more than 1 million cubic meters per hour. According to calculations, this will reduce solid emissions by about 10 tons per year.

Reduced water impact

The water circulation on the UK MK is close to 99%. However, this is not what Kazzinc intends to stop. In 2019, equipment was installed for a fundamentally new complex of facilities for fine tertiary treatment of that part of the water that is to be discharged. Its quality corresponds to the maximum permissible concentration in reservoirs of fishery value. These requirements are even more stringent than those for drinking water. The amount of investment in the implementation of this solution is about one and a half billion tenge.

Industrial waste disposal

The company uses industrial waste as technogenic raw materials for production or as a material for the reclamation of mine pits and quarries. Over the years, Kazzinc engineers have developed processing technologies for almost all kinds of various residues. Arsenic-containing wastes, the processing technologies of which do not yet exist in the world, are stored in a specially constructed storage on the Balapan site of the former Semipalatinsk test site. In 2019, the entire amount of arsenic-containing waste generated was transported there. Now the second stage of the storage is being prepared at the training ground, two new maps are being built.


Traditionally, the list of environmental protection included landscaping. Trees and flower gardens adorn about 22 thousand square meters of industrial site and surrounding area. Every spring, employees of the UK MK conduct community workdays with planting of new trees. This work is built on a systematic basis, while the metallurgists themselves are eager to take the initiative in landscaping.

Issue fee

Last year, only the Ust-Kamenogorsk Metallurgical Complex Kazzinc paid 1.23 billion tenge to the state budget as a payment for emissions into the environment. These payments are annual and depend on the size of rates adopted in the Tax Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the size of MCI. In this regard, a reduction in emissions does not reduce the amount transferred annually to the budget. In addition, more than 3 billion tenge was allocated for the implementation of their own environmental measures at the UK MK in 2019.

Future development in environmental protection

Speaking about plans for next year, it should be noted that Kazzinc concluded a memorandum with the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan. According to this document, the company on its own initiative will be the first in the country where they will introduce the most advanced technologies to reduce the burden on the environment.

In the spring of this year, the company will take on the production of independent experts who will study how the plants work, examine all technological chains and processes. After that, the search for the best environmental technologies will begin directly. It is important that they should be applicable to local realities, raw material composition and climate. It is assumed that in 2020 and 2021 - the theoretical part, calculations, and already in 2022 - the beginning of implementation. Innovations are expected to help reduce air pollution and make production as efficient as possible. And work on the first directory of the best available technologies will make it possible to apply the experience gained to create other regulatory documents that will determine how similar enterprises in Kazakhstan will work in the future.
